Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill – Extended Tour
This extended tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Museum is the perfect tour to fully immerse yourselves in ancient Rome and make the most out of your visit to the archaeological area. Besides visiting the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, you will gain a deeper understanding of the most famous of the Roman hills, Palatine Hill.
Palatine Hill is the centermost of the 7 hills of Rome and overlooks the Roman Forum on the north side and the Circus Maximus on the south side. According to legend, it’s here that the history of Rome begins in 753 BC, when the she-wolf found in a cave the twins, Romulus and Remus. It’s here that one day Romulus will found the first Rome.
This is the reason why the Palatine will become home to the emperors of the mighty Rome. You’ll learn about the history of the emperors, the stories behind the ancient monuments, and the architecture and engineering that made these structures possible. Along the way, you’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of the city and its many landmarks, including the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
Other than exploring the ruins of the imperial palaces, during this tour, we will also visit the Palatine Museum. This special museum sits right among the ruins of the palace and showcases the many archeological discoveries found during the excavations of Palatine Hill.
The Palatine Museum can be visited by buying the FULL EXPERIENCE TICKET, which also grants access to other archaeological sites hidden away among the Palatine and Forum ruins. As a matter of fact, if possible (reservation is required due to the limited capacity of the rooms), we’ll visit also the House of Augustus, which was recently opened to the public after extensive restoration work. This stunning villa was once the residence of the first emperor of Rome and is decorated with beautiful frescoes that provide a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of ancient Rome.
In the Palatine Museum you will be able to admire incredible marble statues, paintings, and terracotta artifacts found in the house of emperor Augustus. Augustus also lived on the Palatine but in a “modest house”, before the transformation of the hill into an enormous complex of palaces. Among the other objects on display is a splendid pair of marble wings found during excavations in 2011.
Besides the Palatine Hill and the Palatine Museum, we will of course visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the ancient religious, political, civic center of Rome. Here you’ll roam among the temples, the Senate house, the temple of the Vesta and the temple of the Divine Julius Caesar.
Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture lover, or just looking for a unique way to experience Rome, our extended tour of the Colosseum and Forum with Palatine Hill is the perfect choice.
