Caravaggio represents a huge milestone in the history of Italian painting, and I find this character very fascinating not only due to his great talent but also because of the amount of mystery still surrounding his tumultuous life 400 years after his death.
We will retrace Caravaggio’s steps through early 17th century Rome and together visit places where he left some of the most spectacular works of his life: the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, where we will see 3 paintings of Caravaggio dedicated to Saint Matthew; the church of Sant’Agostino, a stone’s throw from the Piazza Navona, with its beautiful Madonna di Loreto (or Madonna of the Pilgrims) and finally Santa Maria del Popolo, a beautiful Renaissance church housing two works by the artist dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
During this tour, you will hear about the life of one the most beloved and revolutionary Italian painters, led by his fiery temperament to a turbulent life culminating in his desperate flight from Rome after the assassination of a man during a furious brawl. We will walk through the streets where he used to spend his time after his arrival in Rome in 1595 in other artist’s workshops or inns and see from the outside some of the palaces where he lived.
