`` Great empires are not maintained by timidity``, Tacitus
Taking their name from the ancient Capitoline Hill, the Capitoline Museums are the most ancient museum in the world, whose foundation goes back to 1474. Back then Pope Sixtus IV donated some bronze statues of great symbolic value to the People of Rome, including the famous “She-Wolf” feeding the twins Romulus and Remus.
Located on top of the hill, facing Michelangelo’s harmonious Piazza del Campidoglio (Capitol Square), the museums’ collections are housed in two different buildings connected by an underground passage that will offer you one of the most spectacular views of the Roman Forum, ancient Rome political and religious center.
The Capitoline Museums provide a great opportunity to trace the entire history of Rome through eclectic Ancient Roman art collections and marvelous artifacts, covering Roman and Italian treasures ranging from antique bronzes and marble busts of emperors.
You will also admire the 1500’s fresco paintings of the two historical palaces and some of the highlights of the Painting Gallery that include Caravaggio‘s “The Fortune Teller” avoiding at the same time the large crowds of other famous Rome’s attractions.
Among the many masterpieces, you will see the original bronze statue of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius on horseback (late II c. AD), whose copy is visible in the square, and Gianlorenzo Bernini’s marble head of Medusa (1640’s), statues of Roman gods and goddesses, such as the Esquile Venus or the splendid bronze statue of Hercules.
This tour will be an enriching memorable experience of Ancient Rome, the perfect complement to your Colosseum tour.
